Important Information About Our Data

MOT Check Now is an independent information service. This page explains where our data comes from and what its limits are, so you can use the results sensibly.

We are not the DVLA, DVSA or GOV.UK

We are not a government service and are not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the DVLA, the DVSA or GOV.UK. If you need to tax a vehicle, make a SORN, book an MOT or correct a record, use the official services, for example GOV.UK getting an MOT. We cannot change official records. See the about page for who we are.

Where the data comes from

Vehicle details, MOT history, tax status and similar facts come from the DVSA MOT history service and the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. We show no keeper or owner details.

Accuracy and limits

  • Data can lag. A recent MOT, tax payment or SORN may not appear straight away. The MOT check and car tax check show what the sources hold when you search.
  • Records can be wrong or incomplete. Errors and gaps in official data pass through to our results.
  • Some vehicles are not covered. For instance, MOT history covers England, Scotland and Wales, and Northern Ireland tests are run by a separate service.
  • Our reports omit some checks. They do not include finance, stolen or write-off data.

Estimates and indicators

Our ULEZ checker and Clean Air Zone checker give estimates based on fuel type and Euro status. They can be wrong, and zone rules and charges change. Always confirm with the official source, such as Transport for London or the relevant council, before you travel.

The mileage check is our own analysis of recorded MOT odometer readings. A flag is an indicator that something may deserve a closer look. It is not proof of clocking, and an unflagged vehicle may still have problems.

No professional advice

Nothing on this site is legal, financial, insurance or mechanical advice. A result is not a substitute for inspecting a vehicle, test driving it or asking a qualified mechanic, and our used car checklist is general guidance only. Decisions you make based on our information are your responsibility.

Liability

Our liability is set out in our terms. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law.

Contact

If you spot an error on our site, tell us at the contact page. Errors in the underlying vehicle record must be corrected with the DVSA or DVLA. Our contact page explains what we can and cannot do.
